Know Your Risk: How to Stay Ahead of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breasts grow out of control. Risk factors are things that increase one’s chances of getting a disease. There are modifiable and non modifiable risk factors of breast cancer.

The modifiable risk factors are those that can be controlled and non modifiable risk factors are those one cannot control.

Some modifiable risk factors of breast cancer are; Alcohol consumption, smoking, overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet (fatty and processed foods), not breastfeeding babies, long duration use of hormone replacement therapy (for more than 5 years), late first pregnancy (more than 30 year of age), never had a full term pregnancy.

Some non modifiable risk factors include; Being a woman, advancing age/getting older (more than 50 years), early menarche/early onset of menstruation (before 12 years), late menopause (after 55 years), mutation in some genes, family history of breast cancer in first and second degree relatives.
