Understanding the Challenges of Adolescence

Adolescence is a delicate transition period when young ones move from childhood into adulthood. It’s associated with specific health and developmental needs and rights of these young ones. It’s the time they develop skills and knowledge as well as learning to manage their emotions, relationships and acquire values that are crucial in their adult life. This significant developmental milestone is sometimes distorted when it’s not managed properly.

Apart from Adolescents/teenage pregnancy, other challenges Adolescents face include; mental health issues, drug/substance abuse, tobacco use, alcohol abuse, suicide tendencies, unintentional injuries/accidents, violence and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.

Our understanding of their challenges should let us appreciate the difficulties our young ones go through, so we can counsel and guide them to navigate successfully into responsible and healthy adulthood.
