| Unsafe abortions and their negative health consequences are common among adolescent girls because these pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted. These girls and their children also become burdens on society. The high rate of adolescent pregnancy is a threat to national development, since countries lose out on contributions from these girls in building the economy—contributions they would have made if they had attained their full potential through higher education. It is, therefore, important for countries to formulate policies which empower our adolescents with coping skills to navigate through the delicate adolescence period successfully into responsible adulthood, so they can be productive for economic and national development. |
