Impact of Poverty on Adolescent Pregnancy in Ghana

One-third of all registered births in Ghana are from adolescent girls. This figure could, however, be higher because most adolescent pregnancies occur in rural areas where child marriages are common and births often go unregistered (GDHS, 2014).

Poverty is identified as a major socioeconomic factor associated with adolescent pregnancy, explaining the higher prevalence in rural areas compared to urban settings. In some instances, adolescent girls are forced to trade their bodies for basic necessities, while men may lure them with material goods. Furthermore, a lack of economic empowerment can compel families to push adolescent girls into child marriages, using the bride price to support the family’s needs.

ROLE OF EDUCATION IN CURBING TEENAGE PREGNANCY

Education is a significant factor in breaking cycles of poverty and girls education is known to reduce the prevalence of Adolescents pregnancy. However, most teen girls who become pregnant drop out of school and are unlikely to return after childbirth. This truncates their education which would have taken them out of poverty and economic hardship, hence perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

Let’s encourage any Adolescent we meet today to focus on their education for a bright future
