PROTECTIVE FACTORS reduce negative behaviours in adolescents/young people and make them resilient.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS are categorized into three;
1. Individual protective factors
2. Family protective factors
3. Environmental protective factors

INDIVIDUAL PROTECTIVE FACTORS:
Positive self esteem
Positive social skills
Spirituality
Average intelligence
Good sense of humor
Self competence/self worth
Active participation in tasks
Successful completion of age appropriate tasks

FAMILY PROTECTIVE FACTORS:
Clear parent values and principles
Two parents
Siblings closeness
Mother’s education
Spirituality
Extended families
Connectedness to parents
Child spacing
High parental expectations from school
Congratulate for job well done

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Caring non parental adults
Connectedness to social institutions
Informal support systems (eg; neighborhood camp)
Involvement in school activities
More caregivers in childhood
